There's a new meme out there credited to Steve Rubel of Micropersuasion (via Dwight Silverman who got Steve thinking about the concept because Laurence Simon posed the question which got Dwight to include Steve in his list in the first place... and, well who cares.) It's an interesting idea whomever thought of it first.
It's called 10blogs. The purpose of is to whittle down all the blogs one reads to the absolute 10 "must-haves" for your particular needs.
As Steve Rubel suggests, "the ones you'd take to a desert island." Assuming you had broadband.
I'm game:
1. GapingVoid. Who else is making money starting businesses via blogging where the business isn't about selling blogs?
2. AdRants. A guilty pleasure that actually does serve some purpose of looking at (and skewing) pop culture as it relates to ads and marketing.
3. Seth Godin. I've argued some points with him in the past, but just today I dropped him a note to let him know one of his ideas is now making us money.
4. Ross Mayfield. I want to know how I'll be communicating with my markets 10 years from now. And I think Ross knows.
5. Aldo Coffee Co. I'm assuming I'd be alone on the desert island, so I'll add this to see what featured coffee my wife is serving today, who's playing Friday and what our customers are up to.
6. Pghbloggers. It's the Pittsburgh portal for local blogs and a key for driving biz to our coffeehouse.
7. Tom Peters. It's Tom Peters. Read it daily and something will eventually stick.
8. Blogspotting. I'm selecting this one because it's a great mix of good blog examples and tech stuff that accessible to non-geeks...
Actually, you know what... I might not take Blogspotting. Or Seth's. Or Ross's. Or Tom's or anyone else's except Aldo Coffee.
Because I'd be on a desert freaking island. So why would I want to read about blogs or technology or marketing? I assume I won't be in demand for consulting given my missing persons status... and no need to keep up this blog.
So I guess what I'd need is a blog on how to actually survive on a desert island... start a fire from rocks... cook bugs... distill potable water... build a boat out of sand and twigs... something useful. But I'd accept a garden-variety web site for the same info.
And then a good NY sports blog.
Maybe I'm being too literal.
